Math Mastery

Math Mastery

literacy program

The NYC Department of Education (NYCPS, formerly NYCDOE) promotes math mastery through its new initiative called NYC Solves, which aims to ensure all students develop deep mathematical understanding.

NYC Solves Initiative

Launched in the 2024-2025 school year, NYC Solves is a major initiative designed to ensure that all New York City students develop strong math skills through high-quality curricula and well-trained teachers. A core component of the initiative involves the phased implementation of a consistent, high-quality math curriculum across all schools.

Key details:

High School:

High School: Classrooms will be required to adopt a single, uniform curriculum called Illustrative Mathematics.

Middle School:

Districts will select from a list of pre-approved curricula.

Focus

The approach emphasizes conceptual understanding, procedural skills, problem-solving, and real-world applications, aligning with the New York State Next Generation Mathematics Learning Standards.

Teacher Support:

The initiative also includes professional development and coaching for teachers, in partnership with CUNY, to effectively implement the curriculum.

State-Level "Mastery" Endorsement

Separately from the NYC Solves initiative, the New York State Education Department (NYSED) offers a "Mastery" endorsement on a student's diploma. To earn Mastery in Mathematics, a student must:

  • Complete the requirements for a Regents diploma with advanced designation.
  • Earn a score of 85 or above on three Regents examinations in mathematics.
  • An exemption may be granted if the student earns a final course grade of 85 or higher in an additional mathematics course culminating in a Regents exam.
