Classrooms

At Brownsville Collaborative Middle School for Agriculture & Technology, scholars learn in several different types of classroom environments. When necessary, scholars in any classroom may receive additional academic support and/or services.

GENERAL EDUCATION
General Education (GE) classrooms at BCMS A&T are taught in English by multiple certified educators. There is usually one GE classroom per grade level, but that number may vary depending on interest and qualifying students.

INTEGRATED CO-TEACHING
Our Integrated Co-Teaching (ICT) classrooms have at least two teachers - a general education teacher and a certified special education teacher. Our educators work collaboratively to make any necessary adaptations to methods and techniques to meet the needs of all scholars. Scholars in ICT classrooms are all general education students, up to 40% of whom may have an Individualized Education Plan (IEP).

SPECIAL CLASS SERVICES
Special Class (SC) services are provided to scholars who have been placed in self-contained classrooms with up to 12 students. All of the scholars in the class have IEPs with needs that cannot be met in a general education classroom. They are taught by special education teachers who provide specialized instruction.

SERVICES & SUPPORT

ACADEMIC INTERVENTION SERVICES

Academic Intervention Services (AIS) are provided to students who are at risk of not meeting grade-level standards. A student’s need for AIS can be identified through formal or informal assessments in the classroom (such as running records and work samples) and/or through their performance on district-wide or state-standardized testing.

AIS are not special education services, they are additional instruction and support services to supplement the general curriculum. AIS is often provided in small groups where providers “push in” to offer scaffolding and support within a classroom environment, or “pull out” to offer more focused attention to specific areas of need.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNERS

Brownsville Collaborative Middle for Agriculture & Technology has a robust community of students whose families primarily speak a language other than English at home, and offers support for students who are English Language Learners (ELL).

Many ELLs whose home language is Spanish flourish in our ELL academy. Our educators support students who speak a variety of home languages in their efforts to learn English at the same time as they pursue their education in all other subject areas.

Learn more about the support available for English Language Learners and their families on the New York City Department of Education website.
